A Call to Action: Bay Area LISC AmeriCorps Members Honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.Pursuing a tradition of community volunteering with a new spirit, Bay Area LISC AmeriCorps members answered President Obama's call for service by helping create the places and events kids and youth need to thrive.
AmeriCorps members started their day early, working alongside other community volunteers, parents, and youth to help transform an old empty store into a bright child and family center. All were on hand to paint, build furniture, spackle, and patch holes for Lotus Bloom, a small community organization in Oakland's San Antonio community that offers children and parents programs in art, music, literacy, nutrition, and social activities.
After getting dirty to help young kids have a place to learn and grow in Oakland, AmeriCorps volunteers crossed the bay to help Youth Speaks put on their 12th "Bringing the Noise for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr." event.
This year, we celebrate 15 years of Bay Area LISC AmeriCorps service. Bay Area LISC has placed 188 members at 51 different community organizations across the Bay Area. Bay Area LISC AmeriCorps members have galvanized the residents of the communities where they work to perform nearly 30,000 volunteer hours of service for their neighborhoods. Together with neighbors, our AmeriCorps members are renewing America's promise.
